Review: Woohoo Natural Deodorant
Deodorant or antiperspirant - I never knew there was a difference. But there is!
Deodorant protects against odour and will keep you fresh. Antiperspirant protects against odour and sweat, perfect if you want to avoid underarm wetness but Aluminium is the active ingredient in antiperspirant.
Aluminium is a neurotoxin and works to block the pores of your skin to prevent you from perspiring (sweating). However, sweating is one of our main body's functions to release toxins from our system.
So where do these toxins go when they can't be released? Our armpits are in close proximity to the lymph nodes and breast tissue - I'll let you do the math.
There is also other toxins that can be found in both deodorants and antiperspirants:
- Triclosan - classified as a pesticide by the FDA and a probable carcinogen by the EPA.
- Propylene glycol - the active ingredient in antifreeze. It is also used to soften products.
- Synthetic fragrances
And get this there are benefits from sweating:
- Excrete arsenic, cadium, lead and mercury (according to a study published in the Journal Environmental Public Health)
- Reduce the risk of kidney stones
- Regulates body temperature
- Banish acne
Clearly it is time to make the switch to a natural deodorant - which is what I did recently. Living in Australia and wanting to reduce my carbon footprint, I chose an Australian brand to try....Woohoo Body, which is born and bred in Newcastle, NSW.
Woohoo Natural Deodorant uses 100% natural ingredients and is called a Pro-Perspirant. While sweating Woohoo is hard at work making sure you don't smell by using the odour-busting powers of magnesium, bicarb and activated charcoal, plus 100% pure essential oils (they also have non-scented varieties).
They completely leave out parabens, aluminium, phthalates and artificial fragrances. They're also vegan-friendly, cruelty-free and you can use it on your sweaty feet and other chafe-prone areas.
After researching different scents, I landed on Wild, which was a finalist in the Best Natural Deodorant at the Beauty Shortlist Awards 2020. I chose this one because it extra strong (as I did try to go completely deodorant free recently and was not impressed with that at all). It smells like eucalyptus, cedarwood and honey myrtle - and I also think lemongrass (which I LOVE).
The next decision I had to make was paste vs stick as Woohoo offers both. I landed on stick because I didn't want to have to deal with getting my fingers involved in the process.
I have been using my Woohoo Natural Deodorant Stick (Wild) for about 4 weeks now and am completely sold! It is so easy - I just "roll" it on after my shower and off I go. Sometimes the stick is a bit stuck and all you need to do is roll it on the bench and boom you're ready to apply.
Every now and then during the day I get a whiff of the gorgeous natural smell and have to admit to smiling.
Does it keep me completely dry? Kind of. If I am sitting at my desk all day, then I'm completely dry. If I go for a walk and work up a sweat then I will be a bit wet under the arms....but no odour!
So, would I recommend giving it a crack....DEFINITELY!
Have you used a natural deodorant? Would you?
